| Beschrijving voorzijde | A boldly rendered Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) depicted in a dynamic prancing pose, shown in left profile with head raised and distinctive lyre-shaped horns visible. The figure occupies the central field in high relief against a mirror-polished proof background. The curved legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs above along the upper rim, with the date 2017 below it to the right, separated by a raised dot, following the contour of the coin. |

Coert Steynberg was the Pretoria-born sculptor commissioned in 1947 to redesign the Springbok reverse that had defined South African coinage since 1923. His reworked image — produced for the standard circulation series — remained the authoritative depiction on South African coins for decades. This 2017 issue revisits his original artwork as an explicit historical tribute, part of the South African Mint's broader program of commemorating the designers behind its most enduring coinage traditions.
At 1/10 troy ounce, the format places it within a fractional bullion series rather than a numismatic one-off.
