Additional information

The African Flame Lily — Gloriosa superba — holds the rare distinction of being a national flower that is also acutely toxic. Every part of the plant contains colchicine and gloriocine, alkaloids potent enough to cause fatal poisoning in livestock and humans. The South African Mint's colourized program applied selective enamel overlay to the standard Flame Lily bullion design, a technique requiring a secondary post-strike process entirely separate from the minting run itself.
