Reverse description The brass centre presents a dynamic commemorative composition depicting a procession of stylised human figures forming a sweeping arc, evoking the historic queues of voters participating in South Africa's first democratic elections. At the centre-left appears the date span '1994-2019' marking the 25th anniversary of constitutional democracy, while a large bold numeral '5' incorporating a ballot box motif with a cross occupies the lower field, with the word 'RAND' to its right. The arc of the copper-nickel ring is inscribed with the legend 'LET US LIVE AND STRIVE FOR FREEDOM', a phrase drawn from the South African national anthem, with the engraver's initials 'MJS' at the lower left of the centre field. Repeated micro-lettering patterns appear along the left and right inner edges of the outer ring as a security feature.

Additional information

South Africa's post-apartheid constitution came into force on 4 February 1996, replacing the interim constitution that had governed the country since the 1994 elections. The 2019 circulation commemorative marks that 1996 document — widely noted by constitutional scholars for its exceptionally broad Bill of Rights, one of the most expansive codified in any national constitution at the time of its adoption.
