Issued to mark a decade since South Africa's first fully democratic election on 27 April 1994, this piece belongs to a broader commemorative program the South African Mint released that year across multiple denominations and metals. The 1994 election — in which Nelson Mandela's ANC won 62.65% of the vote — ended over four decades of apartheid rule and produced queues at polling stations stretching for hours across the country.
The .9999 fineness places it among the purest gold issues the Mint produced at that point, a step above the standard Krugerrand alloy.
