These two years bracket a specific moment in Sudanese monetary history: the country was in the early stages of consolidating its post-independence currency system following the transition away from the Sudanese pound's colonial-era structure. The 1969 coup that brought Jaafar Nimeiry to power disrupted a number of administrative and economic programs, and coin production schedules were among the casualties of that instability.
Both dates were struck at the Royal Mint in London. The 1971 issue is notably scarcer in circulation grades.
