Naser al-Din Shah was assassinated on May 1, 1896 — shot by Mirza Reza Kermani at the Shah Abdol Azim shrine near Tehran — just days before the formal ceremonies marking his fiftieth year on the throne. The jubilee coinage had already been prepared. He never saw the celebration it commemorated.
