Azerbaijan's qəpik coinage was introduced following the 2006 redenomination, which replaced the old manat at a rate of 5,000 to 1 — a correction necessitated by inflation accumulated through the post-Soviet 1990s and the economic disruption of the Nagorno-Karabakh war period. Copper-plated steel was chosen over solid copper partly on cost grounds and partly to align with broader CIS coinage trends of the era.
