Issued under the FAO coin program, which by the late 1980s had been running for over two decades as a United Nations initiative to embed food-security messaging into everyday coinage. Myanmar's participation was limited — this 1987 piece is among the few FAO-designated issues from the country before the military junta's 1988 crackdown effectively severed Burma from most international institutional programs following the brutal suppression of the 8888 Uprising.
