Potemkin remains one of the more polarizing figures in Russian imperial history — architect of the Crimean annexation of 1783, favorite of Catherine II, and the man whose name became permanently attached to the concept of elaborately staged deception. Whether the "Potemkin villages" story is apocryphal is still debated by historians, but the phrase entered at least six languages. This is a 2023 ММД issue in the ongoing commemorative series celebrating historical Russian figures, struck in nickel silver — an alloy chosen for its resemblance to silver at a fraction of the cost.
