Muravyov-Amursky secured the 1858 Treaty of Aigun and the 1860 Convention of Peking, transferring roughly 1.5 million square kilometers of Qing-held territory to Russia — including the future site of Vladivostok — without firing a shot. The feat earned him the honorific "Amursky" by imperial decree. He had previously appeared on the 5,000-ruble banknote issued in 1995, making this coin a second commemorative outing for a figure the Russian state has consistently found worth celebrating.
