5 Pyadey Alexander Baranov

Alexander Baranov served as the first chief manager of the Russian-American Company from 1799 until 1818, administering Russia's North American territories from his base at Novo-Arkhangelsk — present-day Sitka, Alaska. The Russian-American Company itself issued its own currency in those territories, including leather and walrus-ivory tokens, making Baranov arguably the only colonial administrator in Russian history whose commercial enterprise ran its own monetary system. This coin comes from the Moscow Mint's ongoing "Пяди" (Pyadi) series honoring figures of Russian geographical exploration and expansion.
