| Beschrijving voorzijde | The national coat of arms of Botswana occupies the central field, featuring a shield charged with three cogwheels above wavy lines and a bull's head at base, supported on either side by rearing zebras, with a scroll below bearing the national motto PULA. The country name BOTSWANA arcs across the upper legend, while the date 1989 and the word IPELEGENG appear in the lower field below the shield. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | A seated figure carrying an infant on their back is depicted in high relief at center-right, rendered in a naturalistic style evoking traditional African childcare practices. The denomination numeral 5 appears in large format to the left of the figures, with the word PULA inscribed directly below it. The field is otherwise plain, allowing the figural group to dominate the composition. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Botswana's 1989 children's fund coinage was part of a broader wave of humanitarian commemoratives issued by African central banks during the late 1980s, coinciding with UNICEF's push to encourage member nations to mark the impending 30th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. The Bank of Botswana struck very limited quantities, and the piece circulated almost exclusively through collector and diplomatic channels rather than commerce.
