Obverse description The national coat of arms of Botswana occupies the central field, depicting a shield supported on either side by a rearing zebra, with a cogwheel and wavy lines in the upper portion of the shield and a bull's head cabochon in the lower portion. A scroll beneath the supporters bears the national motto PULA. The country name BOTSWANA arcs along the upper legend, while the date 1988 and the national motto IPELEGENG appear in the lower field below the scroll.

Reverse description A left-facing portrait bust of Pope John Paul II dominates the central field, depicted wearing a cassock and zucchetto, rendered in high relief with fine detail to the facial features and vestments. A small engraver's initial G is visible near the lower truncation of the bust. The encircling legend reads JOHN PAUL II to the left and 5 PULA to the upper right, with SEPT. 1988 continuing along the right and lower right periphery.
