Amanullah Khan's modernization drive in the early 1920s included a wholesale restructuring of Afghan coinage, moving the country toward a decimalized system modeled partly on European precedents. The 5 Pul sat at the lowest tier of that new structure. Amanullah's reforms ultimately outpaced popular tolerance — his abdication in 1929, following the Saqqawist uprising, cut short what had been the most ambitious administrative overhaul in Afghan monetary history to that point.
