Obverse description The central field of the obverse is occupied by an oval vignette of a three-masted sailing ship, flanked on either side by oval numeral '5' panels and enclosed within elaborate guilloche scrollwork borders. The heading 'Ulster Bank Limited' appears at the top of the note, with 'Northern Ireland Issue' and 'Belfast' at the foot, while the denomination 'Five Pounds' is rendered in large letterpress script across the centre. Corner numerals and finely engraved floral ornamentation complete the composition.

Reverse description The reverse is centred on an intaglio architectural vignette of the Ulster Bank head office in Belfast, rendered in green, presenting a grand neoclassical building with a colonnaded facade, sculptural groups on the roofline, and figures on the entrance steps. The engraving is unframed and occupies the full central field of the note against a plain white ground, allowing the architectural detail to dominate the composition without peripheral ornament.
