Issued as part of Egypt's long-running Islamic Architecture gold series, this piece commemorates Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina — a site that falls outside Egyptian territory entirely. Cairo's decision to memorialize the mosque reflects the Mubarak government's deliberate cultivation of Islamic credibility during a period when the state faced sustained pressure from domestic Islamist movements following Sadat's assassination in 1981.
