Descrizione del dritto Central intaglio vignette of a seated allegorical woman in classical robes, holding a cornucopia and resting amid foliage, set within an oval guilloche frame. Large ornate £5 denomination counters appear at left and right, with the bank title across the top and the date and place of issue at lower left and right respectively. A salmon-coloured underprint band across the lower portion carries the repeated legend FIVE POUNDS, below which two manuscript signatures appear over the titles PRESIDENT and GENERAL MANAGER.

Descrizione del rovescio Printed entirely in green intaglio, the centre vignette shows the circular seal of the Canadian Bank of Commerce flanked by two allegorical figures: Mercury at left, holding a caduceus and gesturing toward the seal, and a female personification of Agriculture at right, bearing a sheaf of wheat; both figures jointly support a British royal crown above the seal. Ornate £5 counters with guilloche lathe-work occupy the lower left and right corners, and a fine engine-turned border frames the entire composition.

The Canadian Bank of Commerce was one of a shrinking number of chartered banks still exercising their Dominion-granted right to issue private banknotes when this series appeared. The Bank of Canada Act of 1934 didn't immediately end chartered bank circulation — notes remained legal tender and continued to be issued through 1944-45, though the banks were progressively taxed out of the business.

The American Bank Note Company had relocated its Canadian operations to Ottawa, and this note was produced there rather than in New York. The £5 denomination in pound sterling is a curiosity for notes printed this late — most Canadian commerce had long settled into dollar reckoning, and pound-denominated issues reflected specific transactional needs rather than everyday retail use.
