The Royal British Legion marked its 90th anniversary in 2011, having been founded in 1921 through the merger of four separate ex-servicemen's organisations in the aftermath of the First World War. Jersey's participation in commemorative issues of this kind reflects the island's particular relationship with wartime memory — it was the only part of the British Isles occupied by German forces during the Second World War, from 1940 to 1945.
