The Provincial Bank of Ireland Limited was absorbed into Allied Irish Banks in 1966, but notes continued to circulate under the Provincial name for years afterward — a common transitional arrangement in Irish banking that left legacy branding on instruments well past the merger. This note falls squarely in that overlap period, issued after the bank had effectively ceased to exist as an independent institution.
De La Rue's involvement with Irish commercial bank issues was long-standing by this point, and the quality of the intaglio work on Provincial notes of this era is noticeably consistent across the series.
