| 表面の説明 | Central field displays the national arms of Sudan, comprising a secretary bird with outstretched wings displayed, bearing a shield on its breast and flanked by two scrolled ornaments at the wingtips, surmounted by a banner inscribed in Arabic. Below the eagle, a ribbon cartouche bears the Arabic legend identifying the Democratic Republic of Sudan. The denomination appears on either side of the central device, with the Arabic numeral '5' and the word 'جنيهات' (Pounds) to the left, and the Latin numeral '5' with 'Ls.' to the right. The AH year '١٣٩٨' and AD year '١٩٧٨' are inscribed along the lower field in Eastern Arabic-Indic numerals. The coin is bordered by a beaded rim. |

The Organisation of African Unity summit was held in Khartoum in 1978, and Sudan issued a series of essai pieces — trial strikes in non-standard metals — to accompany the commemorative programme. Copper essais of this type were produced in extremely limited quantities, almost certainly for distribution to mint officials, dignitaries, and pattern collectors rather than any circulation purpose.
KM#E2 designation confirms this as a catalogued essai, but surviving population data remains thin. Most examples trace back to a handful of European specialist sales in the 1980s and 1990s.
