The Organisation of African Unity summit was hosted in Khartoum in 1978, and Sudan issued this essai — a test strike submitted for approval rather than circulation — to mark the occasion. Aluminium was chosen deliberately for the trial piece, a material almost never used for high-denomination coinage, which is precisely why essais in this metal exist: to evaluate die detail and strike quality before committing to a production alloy. KM#E1 confirms this as the first recorded essai in Sudan's modern series. It was never approved for circulation.
