Obverse description The Sudanese state emblem — a secretary bird with wings displayed, standing upon a shield — occupies the central field, with a scroll above bearing the Arabic legend النسر (The Eagle) and a ribbon below inscribed جمهورية السودان الديمقراطية (Democratic Republic of Sudan). The denomination is indicated on either side of the central device: Arabic numeral ٥ with the legend خمسة جنيهات (Five Pounds) to the left, and the Latin numeral 5 with the abbreviation L.S. to the right. The dual dates ١٩٧٨ (Gregorian) and ١٣٩٨ (Hijri) appear in the lower exergue, flanking the base of the emblem. A beaded border frames the entire design.

Reverse description A relief map of the African continent is depicted within a raised circular border at the centre of the field, symbolising African unity. The map is flanked by two crossed sprigs of wheat or olive, forming a wreath-like surround. Below the central circle, the abbreviations OUA and OAU appear on either side of a decorative element, with the corresponding Arabic legend مؤتمر القمة الأفريقية (African Summit Conference) inscribed beneath. The outer legend SUMMIT MEETING KHARTOUM arcs across the upper field in raised Latin letters, while the corresponding Arabic inscription continues around the lower periphery. A beaded border frames the entire reverse.
