The National Bank of Scotland merged with the Commercial Bank of Scotland in 1959 to form the National Commercial Bank of Scotland, making late-1950s issues like this one among the final notes to carry the National Bank name alone. Waterlow & Sons had printed Scottish commercial banknotes for decades by this point, though their broader business collapsed spectacularly in 1961 following the Waterlow v. Speelman affair — the firm was wound down not long after this note left the press.
Pender served as General Manager, Alexander as Treasurer — both signatures appear on a narrow window of issues from this period.
