Beschrijving keerzijde Bare-headed portrait bust of Nobel Prize-winning Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz, facing half-left, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail including his characteristic large-framed spectacles and jacket with tie. The truncation of the bust is visible at the lower centre of the field. The portrait occupies the majority of the coin's field, with the decorative reeded border visible at the periphery. A small engraver's mark appears at the base of the truncation.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued the year Mahfouz received the Nobel Prize in Literature — the first Arabic-language author to win it — this coin was struck in direct response to that award. Egypt moved quickly; the prize was announced in October 1988 and the commemorative followed within the same year. The .720 silver fineness was standard for Egyptian commemoratives of the period, a deliberate cost-containment measure that kept issues accessible to domestic collectors rather than purely export-driven.
