The International Year of the Child coinage, proclaimed by the UN for 1979, prompted a wave of commemorative issues from nations across Africa and the Middle East — Sudan among them, though this piedfort appeared two years after the official designation. Piedforts, struck at double the standard planchet thickness, were produced in small quantities almost exclusively for collectors and diplomatic presentation sets.
Sudan's early 1980s commemorative program coincided with a period of significant economic strain under Nimeiry's government, making hard-currency collector issues a practical source of foreign exchange.
