Issued to commemorate the Islamic Development Bank's 15th anniversary, this coin reflects Egypt's close institutional relationship with the IDB, which was established in Jeddah in 1975 with Egypt among its founding member states. The bank's mandate — financing development projects across member nations without charging interest, in accordance with Sharia principles — made it a politically significant institution for Mubarak's Egypt, which was navigating its position between Gulf creditors and Western financial institutions throughout the late 1980s.
The .720 silver alloy was standard for Egyptian commemoratives of this period, a step down from the finer silver used in earlier issues of the 1970s.
