Additional information

Ain Shams University was established in Cairo in 1950 as Egypt's third state university, carved partly out of the existing infrastructure of Ibrahim Pasha University. Its founding reflected the postwar expansion of public higher education under the monarchy, just two years before the Free Officers' coup remade Egyptian governance entirely. The golden jubilee commemorated here marks fifty years of an institution that grew to become one of the largest universities in the Arab world by enrollment.

Egypt's .720 silver commemorative issues of this period were minted in relatively modest quantities and saw essentially no circulation.
