The GEM — Grand Egyptian Museum — opened its doors in full in 2023 after two decades of construction delays and cost overruns, positioned deliberately beside the Giza plateau to house the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities ever assembled under one roof. This coin is part of Egypt's ongoing series celebrating the museum's permanent collection. Ramesses II's obelisks are among the most geographically scattered objects of the ancient world; the one originally from Luxor Temple now stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris, shipped to France in 1833 under a negotiated exchange that Egypt arguably got the worse of.
