Reverse description The reverse, designed and engraved by John Bergdahl, presents a solemn commemorative scene evoking the battlefields around Ypres during the First World War. In the central field, a kneeling soldier tends a simple cross grave marker in the foreground, while three uniformed soldiers in characteristic Brodie helmets stand in respectful attendance to the right. Behind them rise the war-shattered ruins of a Gothic structure, identifiable as the Cloth Hall of Ypres, rendered in low relief against a desolate landscape. The circumferential legend 1914 THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1918 arcs around the upper periphery, with the place name YPRES prominently displayed in the lower exergue. The engraver's initials JB appear in the right field, and the composition is executed with deeply struck proof relief against polished mirror fields.
