The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921, partly through the amalgamation of four separate ex-servicemen's organizations that had formed independently after the Armistice. "In Flanders Fields" predates that institution by several years — John McCrae wrote the poem in May 1915, reportedly in twenty minutes, sitting in the back of an ambulance near Ypres shortly after the death of his friend Alexis Helmer.
Guernsey was occupied by German forces from 1940 to 1945, which gives its WWI commemorative issues a particular local weight absent from most Crown dependency releases. The gold plating on copper format became common in the commemorative market after the Royal Mint popularized it in the early 2000s.
