The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921, just three years after the Armistice, largely through the efforts of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, who merged four separate ex-servicemen's organisations into a single body. The Cenotaph in Whitehall — designed by Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1920 — became the focal point of national remembrance precisely because its deliberate emptiness made it universal: no names, no religion, no rank.
Jersey issued several WWI centenary pieces in this format beginning in 2014. Gold-plated steel crowns of this type were produced for the collector market rather than circulation.
