Additional information

The Westland Lysander was designed as an army co-operation aircraft but found its true purpose in clandestine Special Operations Executive missions over occupied Europe, landing agents in dark fields by moonlight. Gibraltar's role in these operations was peripheral, which makes the issuing authority something of an odd fit for this subject — the coin belongs to a broader British commemorative program marketed through the territory rather than reflecting any specific local history.

Production of the Lysander ceased in 1942 after 1,786 aircraft.
