Issued to mark the bicentenary of Queen Victoria's birth, this piece sits in a long line of Isle of Man commemorative gold that the Pobjoy Mint — the island's longtime striking partner — produced with considerable commercial energy. The Isle of Man has no obligation to issue circulating coinage under any central bank, which gives the Treasury unusual latitude to produce high-denomination gold proofs with little more than collector demand as justification.
The "Young Portrait" specification refers to the Wyon-derived likeness used on Victorian coinage from 1838 onward, before the aging effigies took over in later decades.
