Victor Buller Turner was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Snipe on 27 October 1942, one of the most celebrated small-unit actions of the Western Desert campaign. As commanding officer of a composite force holding a isolated outpost overnight against repeated German and Italian tank attacks, Turner's battalion destroyed or disabled over 50 Axis armoured vehicles — a figure that strained credibility until confirmed by post-battle surveys. Turner himself remained in the open throughout, directing fire and personally manning weapons as casualties mounted.
Guernsey's VC commemoration series, of which this is one piece, drew on the island's longstanding ties to British military tradition rather than any direct local connection to the individual honored.
