The Victoria Cross commemorated here honors Henry Ramage, a Scottish-born sailor who received the decoration during the Crimean War for his actions at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855. Ramage was one of the earliest recipients of the VC, which had only been instituted by Royal Warrant in January of that same year — meaning the medal itself was newer than the war it was first awarded in.
Alderney's use of the denomination for VC commemoratives in 2006 marked the 150th anniversary of the cross's institution.
