Geoffrey Keyes was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for leading the November 1941 Layforce raid on what British intelligence believed was Rommel's headquarters at Beda Littoria, Libya. The raid killed several German soldiers but Rommel was not present — he was in Rome. Keyes died breaching the building and was buried with full military honors by the Germans, who recognized his gallantry.
Alderney's VC commemorative series, issued through the Royal Mint under Bailiwick authority, paired individual recipients with specific actions rather than producing generic tributes. Keyes remains one of the younger VC recipients of the Second World War, commissioned at 24 and dead at 25.
