Alderney has long served as a vehicle for British commemorative coinage operating outside the constraints of Royal Mint production quotas. This issue marks the centenary of the interment of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey on 11 November 1920 — a ceremony in which the identity of the soldier was deliberately and permanently destroyed, with the selection made from six exhumed remains by Brigadier General L.J. Wyatt, who chose blindly in a darkened hut in Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise, France.
The burial soil in the Abbey was brought from the battlefields of the Western Front.
