Una and the Lion derives from a allegorical poem in Spenser's Faerie Queene, where Una represents the true church guided by a lion — a composition William Wyon adapted for the celebrated 1839 Pattern Five Pounds, widely considered the finest coin produced by the Victorian Royal Mint.
