Churchill died in January 1965, and the commemorative industry has never quite let him rest since. This Alderney issue appeared forty years after his death, part of a wave of 2005 anniversary pieces produced across multiple British Crown Dependencies simultaneously. Alderney's legal authority to issue coins derives from its unusual constitutional position — neither a UK county nor a Crown Colony, but a dependency of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, which itself sits outside the United Kingdom proper.
The .917 gold specification matches the traditional British sovereign fineness, a deliberate nod to continuity rather than coincidence.
