Issued to mark the centenary of Churchill's first term as Prime Minister — he took office in 1940, though the commemorative logic stretches back to his birth in 1874, depending on which anniversary Alderney chose to acknowledge. Alderney, the smallest of the main Channel Islands, issues collector coins under Crown dependency status, meaning these pieces carry legal tender status but were never intended for general circulation.
Churchill died in January 1965; the state funeral drew more heads of government than any such event in the twentieth century.
