Alderney's 1999 Churchill crown was issued to mark the 125th anniversary of his birth, one of dozens of commemorative pieces the small Channel Island dependency has produced under its right to issue its own coinage — a right it exercises through the Royal Mint on contract. Churchill himself had a direct connection to Alderney: the island was evacuated in June 1940 on his explicit order, its entire civilian population removed before German occupation, and it remained uninhabited by locals for the duration of the war.
