Additional information

Samuel Hood served as a senior admiral during the American Revolutionary War and later commanded British forces in the Mediterranean during the early Revolutionary Wars against France, capturing Toulon briefly in 1793 before being forced to withdraw. Alderney, as a Crown dependency outside the UK proper, has issued commemorative crowns independently of the Royal Mint since the 1990s — this series being typical of the dependency's practice of licensing designs through the Pobjoy Mint.

Hood died in 1816, meaning this issue marks no clean anniversary.
