Gibraltar has issued commemorative crown-sized pieces for British royal events since the 1970s, functioning largely as an export product for the collector market rather than anything intended for domestic circulation. This particular issue marks the April 2011 marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, one of the more commercially saturated royal events in modern numismatic history — dozens of mints and issuing authorities worldwide produced competing pieces in the same window.
