Drake's circumnavigation of 1577–1580 was privately financed by a syndicate that included Elizabeth I herself, making the voyage as much a speculative investment as a naval expedition — the queen's return on her stake was reportedly around 5,000%. Jersey's connection to Drake is peripheral at best; this issue belongs to a long run of Royal Navy commemoratives the States of Jersey produced through the 2000s, most sharing the same cupro-nickel specification across dozens of subjects.
