| Reverse description | Central bust of King Richard II facing slightly right, rendered in a medieval stylistic treatment after historical portraiture. A heraldic lily appears to the left of the bust and a royal shield to the right, together framing the figure within the field. The inscription RICHARD II and his regnal dates r. 1377-1399 appear above, while the denomination FIVE POUNDS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The design is the work of engraver David Cornell. |

| Additional information |
Richard II's reign ended in forced abdication in 1399 — the first English king removed from the throne by parliamentary process — and his subsequent death in Pontefract Castle remains disputed between starvation and voluntary self-starvation. Alderney, a dependency of the Guernsey bailiwick with no independent monetary authority, issued this piece under license as a commemorative rather than circulating currency, a common arrangement for the island's numismatic program in the 2000s.
