Alderney, a Crown dependency not part of the United Kingdom, issues commemorative coinage under its own authority despite using the pound sterling. The island's proximity to the Normandy coast — it was the only British territory with a permanent German garrison during the Second World War — gives its remembrance issues a particular geographic weight that mainland British commemoratives lack.
KM#228a is the silver variant of a base-metal issue, a pairing common in the Royal Mint-produced Alderney series of this period.
