Issued to mark the Queen Mother's 100th birthday on 4 August 2000, this was one of the most commercially anticipated Royal Mint releases of its decade — pre-orders were substantial, and the Mint's allocation sold out rapidly. The Queen Mother was at that point the longest-lived British royal consort in history, a fact that gave the issue unusual public resonance beyond the routine commemorative market.
The Spink reference L8 places it within the luxury gold proof category that the Royal Mint had been developing aggressively through the 1990s as a revenue stream distinct from bullion coinage.
