Issued to mark the respective 85th and 90th birthdays of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 2011, this is one of dozens of commemorative crowns Guernsey has produced under royal warrant since the 1970s — a revenue stream the island's authorities have relied on heavily given its unusual constitutional position outside the United Kingdom proper. Copper-nickel crown-sized pieces of this type were struck in large numbers for the collector market, with relatively few entering general circulation on the island itself.
