Alderney, the smallest of the three main Channel Islands with a population under 2,500, issues coins through a licensing arrangement with the Royal Mint that has no bearing on everyday commerce — these pieces are legal tender in name only, never intended to circulate. The 2001 date places this squarely in the wave of commemorative five-pound pieces produced around the time of Queen Elizabeth II's 75th birthday, a format the Royal Mint supplied to several Crown Dependencies simultaneously under near-identical striking conditions.
