Reverse description A formal portrait of Queen Elizabeth I occupies the central field, engraved by Rod Kelly, evoking the Elizabethan portrait tradition. The royal figure is encircled by four Tudor roses positioned at the cardinal points of a framework of connecting arches, evoking the decorative vocabulary of the Tudor period. A Latin legend identifying the sovereign and the commemorative dates 1558 and 2008 — marking the 450th anniversary of her accession — runs around the periphery. The composition is rendered in deep proof relief appropriate to a piedfort striking.
